Instant messengers can be considered overloaded with features, when you just need to relay a message to the person in the next room. Furthermore, other people may contact you at work, disrupting your tasks. For basic communication, between you and your colleagues, you can use WinSent Messenger. It lets you send and receive messages, over your Local Area Network, send broadcasts to entire groups and more.

Besides selecting a destination folder, all the configurations you can make, during the setup process, involve clicking check boxes to allow the application through the firewall and enabling or disabling certain Windows services. If you are using Windows 2000 or any higher version, you can install WinSent Messenger on your computer, without any difficulties.

Once the application is launched, you may click its system tray icon once to reveal a few options for adding a new contact, finding a user on your network or viewing the message archive. If you add one or more users, new options will be made available, in the same context menu, for sending a message to a contact or the whole group.

The message window is basic. You can bring up the same options that are found in the system tray icon's menu, type in a different recipient, set the application to send your message to a user, domain or workgroup or a contact group and of course, send your message. Received messages are displayed in a small window, in the lower right corner of the screen, where you will also find options for switching to the next or previous message, copying the message or replying.

If you do not know what names your colleagues are using, the application's search feature will help you. It displays all users from your network, along with their names, computer names, domains and statuses (active or offline). You can send a message, add a person to your contacts list or see the message archive by right clicking contact, in the search window and selecting one of these options.

Pros

WinSent Messenger lets you communicate over a network instantly. When adding contacts, there is no need to write IP addresses. The contact's name and group will suffice.

Cons

The application does not support file transfers. WinSent Messenger's simplicity allows you to exchange messages, over a network, instantly, without getting caught up in complex options.
